Neston & Parkgate History of Neston & Parkgate In the sixteenth century Neston became a new port on the River Dee as the silting up of the river rendered Chester inaccessible to larger vessels. A 'New Quay' was built from donations and the Neston soon became an important embarkation point from the Wirral for Ireland and a regular coach service was also established to London. The progressive silting of the Dee saw the shipping trade move to Parkgate and eventually decline from there also. Furher prosperity came to Neston with the opening of the colliery in 1765. Parkgate established itself as a popular Wirral seaside resort during the 1800's and continued as a fishing village until the silting of the Dee estuary made this impossible the sea becoming an occasional visitor only on high spring tides.
