This is achieved by immersing a black & white print in a photographic bleach followed by the toner bath. The metallic silver in the photograph is converted by this method into a far more stable compound brown in colour which should not fade. A limited range of 'tones' is available by varying the constituents of the toner bath. Sepia toned photos should retain their image detail much longer than any black & white or modern colour print or laser copy.
We do not normally charge extra for sepia toning over black & white printing. Other methods of the sepia effect do exist such as filtering using a colour photographic paper or by electronic means as a laser or ink-jet print, but none claim all the advantages of a traditional sepia toned print particularly on a traditional fibre based bromide or chloro-bromide paper.
