In 1889 Dr Francis Gray Smart, the esteemed first President
of the Tunbridge Wells Amateur Photographic Association,
undertook a summer tour of Scotland.
The discovery of his album of photographs simply titled
'Scotch Tour 1889' started a search for the history behind
the collection discovered in a second-hand bookshop in Stockport
in 1986.
A tour made around Scotland over a century ago; The photographs
include images of a now vanished world peopled by busy Victorian
businessmen, Highland soldiers, tinsmiths, fishermen, crofters,
washerwomen and impoverished children.
