In 1889 Dr Francis Gray Smart, the esteemed
first President of the Tunbridge Wells Amateur Photographic
Association,
undertook a summer tour of Scotland.
The 280 photographs, one of which is illustrated here, are
known as the 'Scotch Tour '89'
and now form a small but important part of a private collection
of l,000s of images of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, taken
between 1860 and 1940.
The 'Bob Charnley Collection' contains many
private Victorian and Edwardian family albums, photographs taken
by gifted amateurs who recorded life on the family's Highland
estates.
Few of these images have ever been published; they have a freshness
about them, showing both the gaiety and the serious side of life
in the Highlands of Scotland during this period.
