During the summer months of 1889, Dr Francis Gray
Smart, president of the Tunbridge Wells Amateur Photographic Association
undertook a 'Grand Tour' of Scotland. Ninety-seven years later,
his leather-bound album - with over 250 sepia photographs taken
during that tour - turned up in a second-hand bookshop in Cheshire.
The doctor's pictures of Glenelg and Letterfearn
are quite magnificent. He left a unique Victorian record of '...
one-of the most characteristically beautiful parts of the Highlands',
as a contemporary guide-book compiler called the district, but Bob
Charnley reveals something of the character of Francis Smart himself:
his family background; his early retirement; his dedication to photography
and homoeopathic medicine, and his final days.
For nostalgia fans, and for all who have known
and enjoyed Glenelg and Letterfearn over the years, this book is
a worthy memento.
